Special Rules of Numbers in French
Now, let's discover some special rules for numbers in French. Don't worry, it's easy to understand!
Use of Hyphens
In a number, all elements are linked by a hyphen (trait d'union).
Very simple, isn't it? However, it's something to bear in mind.
21: twenty-one 58: fifty-eight 369: three hundred and sixty-nine
This is a simplified rule, in the past the hyphen was only placed between tens and units. This rule is still valid.
369: three hundred sixty-nine
The Plural of Words
"Mille"is invariable, it never changes. The words "vingt" and "cent" have a special rule. When they are multiplied and there is no other number after, we add an "s". "Million" or "milliard" receive an "s" in the plural.
Not easy to keep track of, is it? Let's look at a few examples.
1000: mille 2000: deux mille
80: quatre-vingts 81: quatre-vingt-un
1 000 000: un million 2 000 000: deux millions
When to Use "and"
In numbers such as "vingt-et-un", we use "et" before the last digit. But be careful, we do not use it all the time, only with 1.
31: trente-et-un 32: trente-deux
