Hello everyone! Today, we are going to study le conditionnel présent. We will see its construction and its various uses to better understand how and when to use it in French.
What is the present conditional?
Le conditionnel présent is a verb tense that expresses eventuality, possibility, or imagination. Unlike the indicative which presents certain facts, the conditional presents actions that are not guaranteed and often depend on a condition.
J'aimerais faire le tour du monde.
In this sentence, the verb aimerais indicates a wish that is not certain to come true.
The uses of the present conditional
1. Eventuality and possibility
The present conditional expresses actions that could happen but are not certain.
Cet après-midi, je pourrais faire du shopping.
Demain, il pourrait pleuvoir.
In these examples, the actions are not sure, they are possibilities.
2. Imagination
Used for imaginary or hypothetical actions.
Si j'avais des ailes, je volerais autour du monde.
Si j'étais riche, je m'achèterais une île.
These sentences present imaginary actions.
3. Wishes
To express a wish or desire.
Je voudrais apprendre à faire du surf.
Il aimerait visiter la France.
The verbs voudrais and aimerait show wishes that are not certain.
4. Advice
Giving advice using the conditional.
Tu devrais envoyer un message à ta mère pour son anniversaire.
Vous devriez essayer ce restaurant, il est excellent.
The conditional devrais and devriez is used here to give advice.
5. Polite requests
The conditional is often used to make polite requests.
Pourriez-vous m'indiquer le chemin, s'il vous plaît ?
Voudriez-vous un peu plus de café ?
The verbs pourriez and voudriez express polite requests.
6. Hypotheses
Expressing hypotheses with conditional structures.
Si j'avais plus de temps, je visiterais l'Espagne.
S'il faisait beau, nous irions à la plage.
The structure si + imparfait + conditionnel is used to express hypotheses.
The construction of the present conditional
To form the present conditional, use the future base and add the imperfect endings.
1. The future base
The future base is generally the verb's infinitif. For example, for the verb aimer, the future base is aimer.
Infinitif: jouer
Base du futur: jouer
2. The imperfect endings
The imperfect endings are: -ais, -ais, -ait, -ions, -iez, -aient.
je parlerais
tu parlerais
il/elle/on parlerait
nous parlerions
vous parleriez
ils/elles parleraient
j'aimerais
tu aimerais
il/elle/on aimerait
nous aimerions
vous aimeriez
ils/elles aimeraient
Note that the base is the same as for the simple future, but the endings are those of the imperfect. Pay attention, to the ear, there is no difference with the pronoun "je".
